Kelsey Smith Act
Governor Mark Parkinson endorsed the Kelsey Smith Act today with a public ceremony in Topeka with the Smith Family, Representative Rob Olson, Senator Pat Apple, and representatives from AT&T and Sprint present.
The law is the first of its kind in the United States and requires cell phone companies to release location information to law enforcement when they have determined a person is at serious risk of bodily injury or loss of life.
Contact Information for State Legislatures
The websites for each state's legislature have been posted on the Kelsey's Law Facebook Page.
You will need to go to the website for your state, find your representative and/or senator and contact them. Ask them to sponsor and pass a bill that is like the Kelsey Smith Act that was passed in Kansas on April 17.
Currently the mandatory release of cell phone location information to law enforcment should a person be determined to be in danger is only required in Kansas. No other state has such a law. Every state needs this type of law. It can and will save lives.
Volunteer Information
The Board of Directors of the Kelsey Smith Foundation, Inc. has promulgated a policy on volunteers working with the Foundation.
As appropriate for the protection of youth & young adults, volunteers will be asked to submit to a background criminal check. Volunteers who do not agree to the background check may be refused assignment.
In addition, all members and directors are also subject to this provision.
Our mission is to safeguard youth and young adults. It was felt this policy is the best practice to ensure the safety of those we serve.
